The purpose of the exibiion was to learn about jewish triumphs in America. But with their triumphs they also endured hard times. We learned a lot about Jewish culture and Jewish people. One of them was Hank Greenburg. Hank was a pro baseball player in 1938. Hank almost broke George Herman’s (babe Ruth) record for most home runs in a single season. Hank’s record was 58 and Babes was 60. I also learned that About 9000 Jewish people fought for the union in the Civil war, and 3000 for the confederacy. Also that the most Jewish immigrants came during1880’s to 1924.
When we were at the gallery I saw a photo that was really interesting to me. It was a photo of a couple of people from India walking around Chicago. I thought it was interesting because they had a look on their face that portrayed curiosity at their surroundings. I also was amazed that they seemed so surprised at how different our society was from theirs and that they marveled on what I would call a regular building. Another thing that struck me was one of the essays about a Vietnamese kid who was forced out of his country. This boy was forced out and onto a boat which was robbed three times. I also thought it was strange that he also marveled at a regular building when he came to the USA, and that he moved to Mira mesa. Where I live and that each day he thought of it as exotic and that I think of it as regular.
Quote: “On the plane it was thrilling, but I did not want to go. Something just told me you’ve just got to do this; it will help you hen you grow up, when we arrived in Chicago we were on the highway-sun shining, daylight glittering- and we stopped to get some hamburgers and some drinks. That was my first time having hamburgers and my first time having this kind of experience. This was our first time in Chicago and I was happy, my mom was happy too. My sister was crazy happy.”
I chose this quote because it made me think about how different it must be outside of America. I tried to imagine the kind of place where the sun wouldn’t really shine ever and I found it very hard. I think whoever said this must have been really grateful but sad to be in America and out of their home country.
